George Edward Walker papers, 1846-1861.

Records of an antebellum architect; although based in Charleston, S.C., Walker's work on projects both domestic, public, civic, and commercial took him to various areas of S.C.; smaller projects reflect consumer desire to contract for renovations to update an existing building to a more fashionable contemporary styles [such as installation of a fireplace mantle of Italianate design] but his work also includes larger projects for completely new structures. Volumes, 1846-1858 and 1861, consisting of receipts, newspaper clippings, and notes on building materials and techniques for homes and public buildings; notes re engineering, construction, railroads, and design issues; places represented include Columbia, Newberry, Charleston, and Laurens, and elsewhere in South Carolina. Volume, 1846-1858 [legal size] containing clippings, notes, and tipped-in letters, re engineering, construction, railroads, etc.; titles include: Proportion of Rooms; Cost of Public Buildings; Our New Custom House (published in Charleston Mercury signed "Carolina"); notes on wharf building, iron architecture; pile driving, recipe for concrete; notes on construction of railroads; "table of ordinates" for excavations; an essay from Hamburg Republican newspaper re production of turpentine; and work notes: "Cost of Materials used at Mr. Gatewood's house at Legare Street in 1845 and 1846"; and "Carpenters work at Newberry Village." Volume, 1851-1853 [legal size] with detailed specifications for construction of Free School in Charleston and "lecture room of First Presbyterian Church, Charleston"; includes copies of letters to the Rev. C. Hankel, Commission of Free Schools, in reference to fees for Walker's services. Folder of unbound materials, 1855 Dec. 10-1856 Aug. 16 and undated, with firms in Columbia, S.C., and Philadelphia, chiefly re prices and design of fireplace mantles, terra cotta water pipes from the "Columbia Terra Cotta Works," and other products; and undated letter from John Band, sending "designs for mantels of various styles with list of prices ... I will furnish to you at the trade discount of 10 per cent," including 20 pencil sketches of Italian marble fireplace mantles drawn on tracing paper in various styles including Greek revival, Renaissance revival, Italianate, etc. Volume, 1861, of Columbia Gas Light Company [43 cm. (oversized-5th)] includes expenses and accounts with such clients as Congaree Iron Works, South Carolina Railroad Company, and other businesses and individuals, for goods and labor, including clay, bricks, turpentine, and for such tasks as carpentry, bricklaying, etc., and for labor and travel of various hired hands; contains brief entry on construction of Hibernian Hall, Charleston, S.C., the mutual aid society and social organization for residents of Irish descent.
